Fitness Friday: Back in the Swing of Things
TGIF! It’s Friday! How was your week? I’m ending this week how I started it – pumped! This was my first week that I felt normal, and wow, was I ever ready for it. I got real workouts in, I’m slowly getting my voice back to normal, and I got a full week of blogging in the bank. Winning!
Plus, I finally got to really try out my new shoes.

Aren’t they sweet? I know I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was getting some new shoes, but I didn’t want to share them with you until I was really sure about them. They’re Brooks Running Pure Flow 2s, and I love them. They’re sooooo light – it’s amazing. Coming from my Asics, they were really a change, but I already feel faster. I can’t wait to get them in a few races!
I also got back into the #planksalot challenge I signed up for in November. I planked every day this week, and boy, I am SORE. When you really push yourself planking, it goes so much farther than just your abs. My arms and legs are sore as well! If you want to read more about the #planksalot challenge, you can here. My theory is that if I distract myself with Twitter long enough, I can push myself longer. So far so good, except I was pushing so hard tonight I couldn’t concentrate on reading. Then, I just counted the seconds.
Anyways, here’s a rundown! Also, I’m finally actually using DailyMile to record my workouts, so friend me if you like. I had an account before, but didn’t have an iPhone and I couldn’t fin an app that would push the info from my Droid to the site. Now, I’m using it!
Workouts
Monday: Kettlebell Power (affiliate link). No, I don’t own kettlebells, although I hope I will soon. I used some dumbbells I had with rubber handles, and it kind of worked. Worked well enough, anyway – I got a good workout in. But still, I really want some kettlebells of my very own. #planksalot at 2:03. I had been planking while sick, and this was certainly a good minute above what I was able to hit then!

Tuesday: 3.5 miles on the treadmill. It was a tough run, but I expected that since it was my first run since, well, December. #planksalot at 2:18 (+15 seconds)
Wednesday: 4.5 miles, but alternated miles of high speed and low incline with half miles of low speed and high incline. #planksalot at 2:33 (+15 seconds)
Thursday: 4 miles, mostly higher speed (I told you these shoes rocked!). I have been needing more breaks than normal, but hoping I’ll be back in my groove by next week. #planksalot at 2:51 (+18 seconds)

Friday: (Planned) rest day
Saturday: (Planned) Maybe 4 miles on my parents’ treadmill; we’ll see.
Sunday: (Planned) 5-6 miles? I like doing my long runs on Sundays, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to tackle my normal long of 8 miles. Stay tuned to see!
Oh, and I’ve got some interesting reading to do this weekend. Mixing things up! I’m sure this will surprise you, if you know me, but, I think it will be a good change/addition to my routine. I’ll share more once I’ve been into it a bit. Can you guess what it is? Here’s a clue!

How were your workouts this week? I’m so glad to be back to normal!

LOVE your new shoes, Alex! And your creative fix re: kettlebells. That’s always what I suggest to people who don’t have one yet.
Bonus: That DVD was in the FITNESS top 10 list for the year!
Great workouts this week!

Thanks! I love how pink they are, haha! The pic does not do them justice. I really want some legit kettle bells now. My weights are not quite heavy enough to be super challenging anymore, so I’m ready to move on!
Also, I did see that! I was excited and checked when I got my issue this week
. The Pure Barre one that I loved did, too! Not the weird kickboxing one, though. Which is good, haha.

Lol, not really, they’re size 9. But there isn’t a lot of ‘extra’ material to them – very lightweight/minimalist, which could be why they look so small. Related – taking pictures of gym shoes is harder than I thought it would be.
I’m thinking I’m going to get a set of like 10-15-20 – found a few online. We’ll see!
I thought you might be!

I was thinking the same thing! Those shoes look tiny! Either that or your hand is massive from all the working out
Jan 18, 2013 @ 14:43:46
Lol I guess it does look a bit odd. Angle? I took so many pics of them and didn’t like any – so this is what I settled on.
Or, my hands ARE very buff.

Cute shoes! And way to go on your plank time! I haven’t tried to go longer than a minute, maybe on my next ab day I will try it out! Have a great weekend!

Thanks! I’m glad the cute ones also fit my feet well
.
I never tried before the #planksalot challenge, but I started with as long as I could and now I’m trying to add around 15 seconds every time. Give it a try! I think they’re extending the challenge into Feb. if you want to join in!
Have a great weekend yourself!

Dang, girl! Awesome workouts and way to come back with vengeance! Also while some runs (and workouts in general) can be rough, even when we expect them, it’s those workouts that make us really appreciate the ones when we are ON. Great work!

This comment got caught in Spam, too! I think my computer has it out for you, between this & the firewall thing.
Thanks! I totally agree. Just got to push through the tough ones and come back the next day.
