#FitnessFriday & Why You Should Carry a Shovel in Your Car
Happy Friday all – and happy March 1st! How was your week? With all the snow right in the middle of mine, I feel like it was a bit disjointed. You know what I mean?
In all, this week didn’t turn out to be too workout-heavy. Not really on purpose. Monday I had planned to rest; and by the time I was going to bed I felt a bit of a tickle in my throat. By Tuesday, I didn’t feel very well, and I could definitely tell a cold was making its way in.
After being sick twice this season (I count illness by season, not years), I wasn’t ready to give in again, and stayed off the treadmill, out of the gym … and on the couch. It worked – I didn’t get any more sick, and I’m feeling better today. So instead of losing a couple weeks, or making them less productive with another nasty cold, I just lost a few days. I’d call that a winning plan – don’t you think?
Oh, and I really didn’t want to add to #novoice2013 again.
Anyway, here’s a bit of a rundown of what I did all week.
Workouts
Sunday: 6.4 miles in the beautiful outdoors. This run was awesome! I only had about two blocks of unplowed sidewalk. Not too shabby a couple days after a snowstorm in Ames. And the snow really gave some nice scenery – I can tell why you guys enjoy running through it so much!
Monday: Planned rest.
Tuesday: Rest.
Wednesday: Rest. Well, with the exception of my little adventure in the morning. We had quite a bit of snow, and I managed to put my car a little bit into the ditch. Lucky for me, my dad taught this girl to carry a shovel! With a little upper body strength – and a little luck – I managed to dig myself out. I’m not gonna lie. It was tough. I’m highly tempted to count this as a strength day. Guess I should’ve stretched, though. Pulled a muscle in my back. Bad Alex!
Thursday: Rest; which was planned and really couldn’t be changed. I had an AIGA Iowa event to attend.
Friday: (Planned) Hoping to get 3-4 miles in on the treadmill, and possibly get through a day of Beautiful Badass.
Saturday: (Planned) Depending on how Friday goes (AKA, how sore I am) I’ll hopefully get a run in. I really like to take advantage of the daylight on weekends for runs. Although, as a side note, the sun is FINALLY starting to go down later – which means evening outdoor runs will return soon! Yay!
Sunday: (Planned) I’ve got my weekly long training run on the schedule. This week we’re up to 7 miles. Wish me luck! Although with my (accidental) 6.4 last week posing no issue, I doubt I’ll have trouble with 7. Maybe I’ll up it to 7.5?
Although this week didn’t feel too productive, I’m glad I took it easy and didn’t push another cold on myself.
What do you do when you can tell you’re getting sick? Rest, or push through?

I rest. I’d rather rest and be sick for 1-2 days than push through and be sick for weeks.

Agreed! Although I hate doing it. I need to be better at resting.

I really wish the sidewalks weren’t covered in ice because I am craving my outdoor runs

Ugh I know. You have to be so careful where you step. Otherwise …. down. Lame!

Glad you’re feeling better! The snow totally through off my week and I didn’t account for the workout that is shoveling snow. Let’s just say, I was SORE!

Lol, snow SO counts. It’s so heavy! Plus I’m always in a hurry, so it’s a bit of cardio as well. Lol.

Glad you didn’t get more sick! And great advice, Dad!
My parents always taught us to keep a trunk full of the usual supplies, just in case.. but a shovel was not one of them. Great tip for this crazy midwest winter we’ve been having!

Lol, I know! I’ve got all the other usual suspects…blanket, etc. Shovel was key, though!!
