But as you know, I love trying new things. So while I didn’t really plan on this being a “Tries it Out” post when I agreed to do it, it worked out really well.
As I was mulling over what to make, I tried Sierra Nevada’s Extra IPA Torpedo beer for the first time. I loved the flavor! And for some reason, I thought it would be delicious paired with cinnamon. Thus, these cupcakes were born!
I started with a basic cupcake recipe that I found online. Jessica, from the group, suggested splitting the milk with beer to integrate it, so that’s what I tried in my first batch. I also added a teaspoon of cinnamon.
I made one round, and then tried adding more beer, but didn’t have much luck. The cinnamon and vanilla flavors were too strong to let the IPA through.
For my second batch, I took out the vanilla and cinnamon, and did half beer, half milk. The flavor was good, but still not as strong as I had wanted. The IPA wasn’t coming through.
The cupcake itself wasn’t meant to be overly sweet – that’s was the frosting would add. Trying to add some more beer flavor, I switched out the majority of the milk for beer.
Ah, yes. That’s it!
Now, a big problem with this recipe for me is that I’ve never had a “beer” cupcake. So I just wasn’t sure if I had the flavor quite right. But, I think what I came up with is pretty tasty! I topped it with a whipped frosting and a bit of cinnamon. I figured out that doing it this was gave it the contrasting flavors I was going for.
While it was fun coming up with my own cupcake recipe, the process was not my thing. I’m not too experienced as a baker, which I’m sure didn’t help.
Guess I wasn’t meant to be a food blogger, huh?
But now onto the recipe portion of this post …
I considered making these cupcakes with “healthier” ingredients. But you know, we have to enjoy life sometimes. As a trade-off, this is a small recipe, so you won’t over-indulge to get a sweet treat.
Torpedo IPA Mini Cupcakes
(Adapted from How Sweet it Is)
Makes 12 mini, or 2-3 large, cupcakes
1 egg white
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp butter, melted
1/4 cup flour
1/4 heaping tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 tsp milk
5 tsp Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA
Some kind of a whipped frosting
Small amount of cinnamon to sprinkle on top
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- In a bowl, whisk together sugar and egg white.
- Stir in melted butter.
- Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir until smooth.
- Stir in milk and beer.
- Fill cupcake liners about 2/3rds full. Bake for 5-6 minutes (for minis) or 10-12 minutes (for regular). You’ll know they’re done when the toothpick comes out clean.
Top with a whipped vanilla frosting (mine was store-bought) and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Enjoy!
