Is this thing on? It’s been a hot minute since I last blogged. And, it was a hot minute prior to that blog, too. To be honest, I don’t have an excuse — I just haven’t felt a strong desire to sit down and right, and I’m not forcing it. I’m not sure if it’s due to my career change this year, or if I just need to re-focus my concept behind the blog (because if anything, for once, I really have no desire to blog about Crossfit, among other things). Regardless, I think you’ll see a shift in this blog in 2016, if and when I choose to continue writing. I’m really interested in spending my time these days in things that give me fulfillment. If that isn’t blogging, then I need to move away from it for awhile. So, we’ll see.
Anyway, earlier this month, I had a whim where I felt the urge to type a bit. I thought, since I was also working on my Christmas shopping list, it might be fun to share a few of my “favorite things” for those of you who are checking family and friends off your lists. Then, we lost internet for a week, more life happened … and a few days before Christmas, I’m finishing this post up. I know there are some last minute shoppers out there, though, so hopefully this list is still helpful. (Plus, many of the items featured can be found on Amazon Prime, which means free two-day shipping.) These are all things I would choose and approve to purchase for my own family or friends this holiday season, and I’ve included no affiliate links today. I hope you find one or two things for those hard-to-shop for people in your life!
For the Casual Cook: Jo!e Vegetable Keepers
I purchased my first vegetable keeper several years ago, and I really do believe they keep the vegetables better longer than a regular tupperware container. I own one made for onions, green peppers, and tomatoes, and would buy the ones for other vegetables if I had a habit of using them.
You can find a selection of these on Amazon, but I’ve seen them often in niche kitchen stores. Personally, I purchased mine from TJ Maxx for about $5.00 a piece, I believe! What a steal.
For the Sci-Fi Fan: Writers of the Future
Full disclosure, I received this book for free in exchange for a review, but I’m not getting any kind of compensation for recommending its purchase, and this is my honest opinion, as usual! To be honest, I wasn’t sure that I would like this book. I’ve been a Buffy fan forever, and enjoy science fiction movies, but never really ventured into books that seemed to be truly science fiction, like this one. I think that was probably a mistake! I really enjoyed reading the short stories that were included in this book. Many of the stories were so good, in fact, I didn’t want them to end!
Within this volume, “Planetary Scouts” might have been my favorite story if I did have to pick one. Amongst the many sci-fi stories, there are also a few “stories” within the volume that are writing inspiration. The editor also included some really awesome illustrations. There are quite a few volumes of these books (I read volume 29) but I’m sure they’re all top-quality. The last thing I’d like to mention – this is a great type of book for a casual reader. Each story was a pretty quick read, so it’s easy to put it down for a few months at a time without losing your spot. You can find the book on Amazon Prime here.
For the Wanna-Be Superhero: Gotham, Season One
I *just* started watching Gotham, but I am loving it so far. The series follows the life of Jim Gordan (he was the cop you may have seen in the newer Batman movies, played by Gary Oldman). Jim’s a good guy, trying to help clean up Gotham City in the days before the rise of Batman.
Gotham is shown on Fox, but I feel like in these new days of Netflix, we often overlook new TV greats — and I think that this series will continue to be great. The acting, the costumes, and the filming techniques are all superb for television these days. Gift this so the superhero lover in your life can get in on the fun too!
For the Girly (or Not-So-Girly) Girl: a Shellac Manicure
I keep my beauty routine a little basic. So, when I started to really enjoy getting my nails done regularly this year, I was pretty surprised. Honestly, however, the simple fact of having a clean manicure can really boost my confidence and make me feel in control of a day. That’s why I’ve totally fallen for Shellac Manicures. Also called “gel” manicures, these are solid manicures that can survive the toughest of days. Mine lasts through Crossfit!
Manicures aren’t a “typical” holiday gift (in my house, anyway) but I think that it would be a lovely surprise for any woman in your life — especially one who needs to take a few minutes out of her day to relax! There are obviously many options of places to get manicures. Locally, I prefer Cali Nails, which is in Johnston, a suburb that is one over from where I live.
What are you purchasing for your friends and family during this holiday season?
Stay tuned … I’d say it’s likely the blog will survive my latest mood swing. The question is, what will it be like?
