Currently: July!

Good day ladies & gents! How’s it going? It’s been a hot minute since my last post, but I’m happy to report I survived summer semester. Two days of 3+ hours in class a week, plus homework, makes for a pretty busy Alex. Not to mention starting up my new job, finding a new crossfit, and finally getting our apartment back from the wedding! Now that all that has wrapped, I plan to be posting more again. The break (I use that word loosely as I did have a couple posts in there) was actually kind of good for me, I think, because I learned to accept that I didn’t have to blog all the time to be happy. It sounds crazy, but you can get so wrapped up with a blog, that you forget who you were without it. That being said – I did really miss being in the “blog world” and I’m definitely happy to be back!

So in honor of July, everyone’s favorite “currently” post. Cause I haven’t been current on here for awhile – you know?

Trying Something New: Acroyoga with Pop Up Yoga DSM

A couple of weeks ago, my friend LaDonna invited me to try out a free new local event called Pop Up Yoga Des Moines. I’d heard a little bit about it here and there on social media, but hadn’t made it yet, and her invite was exactly the prompt I needed to look into it more seriously. By the end of the chat, we had made plans to go the following Saturday.

About midway through the week, I heard something that made me a tad nervous. The featured yoga class that week? AcroYoga! Not the usual “namaste” I was used to, and something that seemed to be quite a bit outside my comfort zone. LaDonna and I chatted about it and decided that we would go anyway, and, if nothing else, have a little fun making fools of ourselves. What did we have to lose? Continue Reading →

Five Things Friday

Happy Friday, friends! Thank you ALL for your kind words of congratulations about our wedding! May has been a whirlwind so far, and I can’t believe it’s already half over. After saying goodbye to the rest of our Kenya family at the end of April, May has mostly been recovery – recovering our wedding-covered apartment, catching up on other home-related things (I guess we do have to pay bills) and, to be honest, relaxing a bit. Oh, and not to mention some small trips on the weekends.

I was thinking about this blog, too. Although I love posting on it, as many of you have seen, it’s hard to make it a priority. Right now, that’s still okay with me, but I want to be able to check in from time to time. Five Things Friday is honestly a pretty good format for me to do that. Not so time intensive, but I can get the highlights out, and still feel like I’m staying in the loop. And then, when I have time? A real post! But for now, five things. Today’s five things will probably give you a *little* insight into why else I’ve been (and continue to be) so busy. It’s also quite a bit longer than most of my Five Things Friday posts, but, again, you’ll see why. Continue Reading →

Happy Day … Happy May!

So, can we talk for a minute about how I BLINKED and it’s already May 1? April went so fast. I can’t even tell you everything that happened yet, but it was a big month. Obviously, the highlight was seeing gobs and gobs of family, combined with this little event … Continue Reading →

15.2 + 15.3 Scaled Recaps: Crossfit Open 2015

You know what I’m thankful for? The Crossfit Open. Because, no matter how crazy busy I’ve gotten with wedding meetings, RSVP lists, and color swatches, it reminds me that I need to pull back into the blog, at least for a quick check-in, and share with you all my experiences with the workouts.

The posts may not be much, but I feel strongly about them for one reason: I want those who didn’t participate this year, or those who may be thinking about joining Crossfit in 2015, to feel inspired to join in on the fun in 2016. Simply because, I love the Open. Not because of the workouts (once you see 15.3, you’ll see why) but because of the community around them. It’s so much fun participating in an event that not only brings together my box with a weekly community workout, but also brings together the community as a whole. It’s so much fun being able to connect with old friends from around the nation – just to ask, “Did you do 15.X yet?” Continue Reading →

15.1 Recap – Deadlifts and Snatches and Jerks, Oh My!

And knee-raises, of course. But I had three words to use to make that title work, and knee-raises are just awkward to say. You know? Saturday morning, I took on 15.1 and 15.1a at Crossfit Primal (my box) in Waukee, Iowa. Ginnie Coleman Photography took these AWESOME shots, and I just couldn’t let this workout pass without featuring some of them. A big thank you goes to her – it’s so fun to see what I look like in action!

I debated a lot between doing the Crossfit Games Rx or Scaled. Honestly, I still wonder if I should have done this first workout Rx. But, at the end of the day, I knew that pulling off multiple 75# snatches, combined with toes to bar, wouldn’t necessarily leave me a happy camper – even if I could pull it off. So, while Scaled seemed like it might have been a little bit easy, I went with it. Here’s the workout: Continue Reading →

Thinking Out Loud: We’re TWO Months Out!

Less than two months. TWO MONTHS. Can you even believe this? When I got engaged, I thought that an April 2015 wedding seemed like ages away. Now, it’s so close that I can’t believe it – and can no longer procrastinate. It’s time to plan this thing. So, my nights these days are filled with color swatches, Etsy searches for the perfect accessories, lists, and other, stereotypical wedding things. Most days, it’s still fun. The things that aren’t so fun … are getting done, and that’s all that matters. Continue Reading →

Workouts of the Week: Snow Removal … For Time?

Hey-o. Happy Friday, ladies & gents! Checking in with another week of workouts. What else do I do on a Friday?

First, though, one of my favorite new(ish) videos – if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth a watch. Plus, you should watch it, because I had to Google a bunch of random words about sweaty girls to find it again and share it with you … and let’s just say that it gave me some not-so-desirable results. Workouts of the Week(s): Coming Back + Humble Pie

It’s been a little while since we’ve done one of these posts, huh? Well, it had also been quite a while since I had done many workouts – so, I suppose that makes sense. But, I totally am pumped to get back to sharing my workouts since my blend Katie decided to bring back her Fitness Friday link-ups. And, though in one of her blog posts she said she’d keep doing it even if no one linked up, at least she’ll have me. Eh?

There was also a time I linked up with her not realizing she had shut down the link-up. Long story.

Anyway, this week’s post is really about … being a little humble. Appreciating where you’re at with your fitness level right now. Why? Because when you go to Kenya and don’t Crossfit for a month … some of those gainz … there are gone. Continue Reading →

Thursdays are for Thinking Out Loud

It’s been … quite the week. As a result, I’m feeling majorly MIA from the social media & blog world. But as we approach the weekend, I do have a few thoughts stirring around in my head, so I thought I’d join in with Amanda for a little “thinking out loud”. Otherwise know as, Alex rambles.

1. Did you notice that I lost a couple of posts?

I actually didn’t, at first, but my mom (biggest fan, ‘natch), and then Laura, mentioned to me that my engagement photo post from last week was gone. Continue Reading →

Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Pictures

Happy hump-day, everyone! I hope everyone is having a good week so far. It’s flying by, if you ask me. Although it’s been less than 24 hours since my last post (and I don’t typically post so close together) I decided to post anyway. Because, today is a special day for me and the fiance, so that made the post especially appropriate. You see, today is Phyll and I’s seven-year dating anniversary. Seven whole years – can you believe that? To be honest, this morning, I did the math wrong and thought it was eight. Math gets hard after five years. Right?

Anyway, here is a smattering of engagement pictures for your viewing pleasure. I think we had close to 300 total, and it was SO hard to choose what to share. I love so many of them for different reasons. Our photographer for the engagement shoot (and for the wedding) is Nuzum Photography out of Ankeny, Iowa. They have really been a dream to work with. I can’t wait to see our wedding shots! Continue Reading →

I’m Alive! And Back in the U.S.A.

Why, hello there! Long time, no see! So yeah, I’ve been home for a couple of weeks. But between trying to get used to “normal” life again, unpacking, and some family stuff that came up, I haven’t been able to check in, with the exception of a couple of times on Facebook. My trip? Pretty much … amazing. I don’t think that’s a wholly original word to describe a trip to Africa (did that really happen?) but it’s the only word that I have. Continue Reading →

How to Find a Workout Buddy {Guest Post from Katie Looking Forward}

As I’ve been traveling, my wonderful blends have been guest posting for me so I don’t have to stress while I’m away. Today’s post is from Katie, who I met at Healthy Living Summit and blogs at Katie Looking Forward. A fellow Midwesterner, Katie blogs about all sorts of fun things including running, yoga and triathlons. But, that’s not the least of it! Ah, how about I just let her talk, huh?

how to survive your big day {Guest Post from LLinaBC}

Happy New Years Eve! I’ve been hearing about New Years in Kenya for years, so I’m excited to finally be here for one. Since it happens to be Wednesday, my guest post today is Chelsea from Little Lessons in a Big City. I met Chelsea, a fellow Des Moines-er through Twitter (I think?) and when I was brainstorming who I wanted to guest post for me, I just knew I had to have her. She just got married, and let me tell you, it was gorgeous! Her tips are just divine, and since my brain is all things wedding these days, perfect for me. I hope you enjoy some of her tips (and even if you aren’t getting married, great, great pictures!).
